I finally found something that I could use at eatathomecooks.com. But I had to change it up because that soup was a Smoked Sausage, Cabbage and Oat soup. She used steel cut oats which when cooked act like barley. I had no steel cut oats, so that was already one change to the recipe and I was just on the title!!
I gathered all of my ingredients and then a little thought came into my head to read the ingredient list on the smoked sausage. Double Drat It All!! There's liquid smoke in smoked sausage! Did you know that it has gluten in it? Yep, there are a few weird things that are considered "hidden gluten." Liquid smoke, most soy sauce, canned beef broth...anything containing caramel color or malt (including normal Rice Crispies) are on the list of no-no's. So my original soup plan became plan B. I made the soup without any meat. I put the leftover Italian sausage from the Italian nachos in my bowl and the sliced smoked sausage in the kids' bowls.
Cabbage Soup: (adapted from this recipe)
2 Tbsp olive oil
3 ribs celery, chopped
1 onion, chopped
2 cups carrots, chopped (mine were matchsticks, but that was a fluke)
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp thyme
1 bay leaf
1/2 head cabbage, in 1/4 inch slices
1/4 tsp Tabasco sauce
1 tsp Dijon mustard
6 cups chicken broth (or veggie broth is making this completely vegetarian)
1 14 ounce can crushed tomatoes
salt and pepper to taste
4 potatoes, peeled and chunked
1 pound smoked sausage, sliced (optional) (other options are Italian, Andouille, or Chorizo)
In a large Dutch oven, heat oil over medium and cook celery, carrots and onion until the onion is soft. Add the garlic, thyme and bay leaf and cook another minute. Throw in the cabbage, cover, reduce the heat and cook 5 minutes or until cabbage is wilted. Uncover, return heat to medium and add remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil, cover, reduce heat again so it does not boil over and cook 30 minutes or until potatoes are soft.
*Note, I have since found out that caramel coloring in North America is considered gluten free. That opens up a whole group of foods that I thought were off limits. YEAH!!
Your turn! What did you cook this week in your kitchen?

Trying to cook gluten free ends up very tricky sometimes! But you made this stew just fine! It looks like a very homey and warm dish, perfect for a family!
Gosh, I never knew liquid smoke has gluten in it, but then I never read the labels unless I'm really bored or something. I suppose if I have allergies and certain intolerances I'd be paying a lot more attention. Whatever it is, this looks really good! I love cabbage in soups and stews.
I love this one. It is amazing how many things gluten is in that I have no idea about. I am digging through my gluten free cookbooks this week my dear, anything in particular you are looking for, or not looking for? I'll email you some recipe I scan.
Great idea and sounds really tasty!
My wife loves Cabbage Soup! terrific post!

Good info here on the liquid smoke, it was a surprise to me!
I am saving this one, my husband has been after me to make something with cabbage and this does look a lot healthier and easier than cabbage rolls. Thanks for sharing this one and happy Monday!
I never knew liquid smoke had gluten. I love cabbage in caldo de res, but never thought to make it the star, yummy!!
Such a comforting, delicious soup! I'd make mine with my favorite Italian sausage :)
We love Cabbage Soup and your recipe looks great. Thanks for hosting and have a great week!

Soup is certainly one of my most FAVORITE ways to eat cabbage! I'm loving all of the fresh flavors in this!

What did you say it has? Cabbage?! Oh yes, this rabbit is jumping right to the plate! I love cabbage... Do you want to know how much? Shhh, it's a secret. We went through 80+ pounds (40 kilograms) of cabbage since last October (when I started to count)... :)
Hi! Thanks for the great linky!

When I was a little girl my aunt use to make Cabbage Borschet and I loved it. I haven't had it since. However, this sounds quite good. I'll have to save this to make soon. Thanks for sharing!
Kristen, I have shared Blueberry Crown Muffins. Thank you for hosting!
It's always amazing to hear what contains gluten. One of my friends is gluten-free, and she says there are certain shampoos that she can't use. I'm glad to hear that you were able to find another kind of sausage to use!
I also like making soups or stews with left-overs as you can basically add any vegetable you have and I hate letting good food come to waste. My concoctions seldomly turn out to look so thought-out than this soup, however. Delicious!
And the one of the first things that comes up when you google cabbage soup is that 'miracle soup' you are supposed to eat a whole week or so to lose weight. ;)))
Cheers,
Tobias
this soup reminds me of a stew my Mom would make when we were little :) Yum!
This soup looks amazing! I can't wait to try it! Thanks for sharing.
Wow! You are amazing... I never knew that about liquid smoke! I love the idea of throwing leftover veggies in a pot to make soup. I bet it's yummy!
This sounds delicious and so packed full of healthy nutrients!
Yum! This sounds delicious! I love cabbage and I pinned this so I remember to make it.
Thanks for hosting! Happy Valentine's Day!
You are very good at improvising - this looks delicious!
I'm not having to watch the gluten, but I had NO IDEA there were hidden glutens - that's great information to share, Kristen!
You created magic with your leftover vegetables! What a delicious, warm and hearty soup!
Happy Valentines Day!
Your soup sounds really comforting and delicious - and as I have three cabbages from my organic vegetable box delivery, your timing is perfect! I'm sorry I've shared a dessert that contains gluten, but I was so pleased with how the molten chocolate babycakes turned out I wanted to share. I wonder if you could use gluten free flour in them - there's only a third cup of flour in the whole recipe so I am almost sure it would work. Thank you for hosting, and Happy Valentine's Day.
This reminds me of a recipe my mother-in-law makes often...I really like it!
Today I’m linking up my Valentines Cupcakes with a Twist.

this soup sounds so yummy on a cold day...thanks for sharing!
Oh Kristen, this soup looks delicious with all the veggies in it...very hearty as well, especially good when the weather is cold like right now :)
Hope you are having a great week and Happy Valentine's Day!
I think your adaptation looks delicious--and much better than the stir-fry we default to when we have miscellaneous leftover veggies.
Great information to share.
It's surprising how many foods have some gluten in them, isn't it? You did a wonderful job with this soup!
I made stew this week but looking at your recipe here I'm already inspired to cook soup again. Your cabbage soup looks really good. I have exact amount of cabbage that I wasn't sure what to use besides salad. This sounds awesome. I need to buy smoked sausages (we need to put this!). Adding Dijon mustard is a interesting one. Sounds so yummy!
I really love a hearty cabbage-y soup. Although I'm not gluten intolerant, I have a sister who is. I cannot believe all of the stuff gluten is in! Liquid smoke...who knew? I will try this recipe, for sure.
Delightful soup...love cabbage! This is perfect for the colder evenings we have been having :)
