Donut Muffins

This post has been sitting in my files for over a year.   I posted a coffee cake that is incredibly donut like a couple of years ago (with no photo...working on that one, too).  It is still a favorite.  These are like tiny handheld versions.  They are always a hit with my sugar loving crew.  The nutmeg gives them a definite donut flavor.

On a completely different note, I have a question for you.  How much preamble do you like to read before you get to the recipe?  It seems like sometimes I drone on and on and other times I have a quick paragraph like the one above.  I have noticed that I have retreated a bit back into the recipes versus sharing things about my real life.   Sorry.  I have 6 weeks before I move to Jacksonville.  My husband is in San Fransisco until next week, when he heads to Florida to find us a place to live (I know, we are cutting it close).  School ends on the 26th; next week.  My calendar is filled with end of the year activities..and doctor appointments.  I had to get all 5 kids in for physicals so that they can transfer to FL schools.  Right after Memorial Day, my oldest two boys go on to a church camp for 4 days.  The next Monday, my oldest heads off to a summer school program at a local college until the Friday before we move.  The last week in June my younger 3 boys will be at Boy Scout camp.  I don't know if I can fit anymore in. ;-)

Donut Muffins:
1 3/4 cups flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1 egg
1/3 cup melted butter
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup milk
topping:
1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 cup melted butter
Combine the egg, 1/3 cup butter, 3/4 cup sugar and milk in a bowl.  In a smaller bowl, combine the dry ingredients.  Add the dry ingredients to the wet, stirring until just moist.  Scoop into a greased muffin tin.  Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 20 minutes.  While still warm, but not hot enough to burn you, dip the tops of the muffins in the melted butter and then in the cinnamon sugar mixture, covering evenly with sugar.

We love, love, love your coffee cake version of this recipe, and turning it into a muffin is a stroke of brilliance! :) Wishing you all the best with the activities on your plate, and I'm looking forward to more recipes on your new website!

What could be better than a donut muffin combo?!? You sound so busy, on top of moving~GOOD LUCK with the whole transition!
I think your posts are a good balance. Sometimes you have more to say, and sometimes not, but that's perfectly fine:) You are genuine and I love your blog!

I read cookbooks specifically for the preamble. I really like being able to connect in some way with the creator of the recipe. It just seems so much nicer.

I havw been wanting to make these for a long time. When there is a preamble I read is,just in case there is something I need to know.

Yummy recipe. And to be 100% honest, I will read the preamble to recipes until it doesn't interest me, which mean I usually make it through the whole thing :)

These look delicious! I enjoy the preambles-long or short. It's fun to get to know the person behind the recipes. Good luck with your move!

I got the biggest weak spot for donut muffins. Best of luck with your move - you are incredible!! Hope it goes as smooth as possible.

I do enjoy reading the preambles when I've got the time. But I don't always read all of it if it goes on and on. Your's is good though. Good luck with your move! We've moved several times in the past few years and I know it is stressful! I'll be happy to do a guest post if you decide you're looking for any guest posters during your moving time. If not, that is totally fine too.

I love your blog both for the recipes and also for the preambles. I love to read the write ups accompanying the recipes and hope you continue with them. Good luck on your move and hope it all goes smoothly

Donut muffin - a donut and muffin in one. That sounds awesome. About preamble - its always fun/interesting to read. If someone finds it long they can always skip it and go straight to the recipe

Hey Kristen!

As I sit here reading your post on donut muffins, I'm eating an apple currant muffin and swigging a glass of milk! I just want to go make another batch of muffins now! Instead, I'll bookmark these and come back to them in a few days!

PS - I read the preamble and enjoy it because it makes a connection with the person whose blog I'm visiting ... for me, food blogging isn't JUST about the food. It's about commentary, creative writing, photos, and life as well as an all-important recipe for dinner or dessert!

funny you mention the preamble, I find from the comments back to me, so many times readers have not read my ramblings as I call it, therefore they do not know anything other than the recipe itself - I know in busy times, I too am interested in others recipes but at least I try to get some inkling of the post or meaning behind the recipe...
now, as for time management, hey, good luck kiddo.... kidding, you know it's one of the many hats you wear well and you will arrive just fine and settle in sunny Florida, hopefully before hurricane season,, oh no ... I shouldn't have said that!!!!

Sounds like you're going to be a very busy bee for the next few weeks! These donuts will get you through, though =) They look super tasty!

These look so good! What a perfect combo-- donuts and muffins!! I hope your move goes well and I'm so impressed with your commitment to blogging during this hectic time. Jacksonville seems like a great city. I have an aunt who lives there. I hope your family really enjoys it and adjusts quickly. I have moved many times and know there are both good and bad things about it.

I always love your chat and the recipes. This donut muffin is also another fabulous one! Good luck with all the end of year projects. This is the time when suddenly the accelerator is pushed on and things just go mad! Sounds like you're one month ahead of us here. I can feel it mounting up! Courage...

When the moving boxes are all unpacked and the place begins to feel like home, pour a cup of coffee, throw your feet up and nosh on a couple of these beautiful donut muffins!

I've seen these muffins before and vowed to make them. Then lost the recipe. I love donuts so it only seems logical that I'd love these. I'm not picky where your posts are concerned - I try to read them all. I often wonder the same thing. Do people read my blog for the recipes, or my chattering. Sounds like you are an extremely busy woman these days!

I've seen dounut muffins posted a couple of times and have printed off each and every recipe. Unfortunately, they've never been made... yet! Both of my kids would adore these, I really need to make them.
You are simply amazing getting all of that list done! I've only got the two, and have found myself way behind in the last few weeks. I find it all overwhelming sometimes, so my blog suffers first.
I enjoy the bits about your life as well as the recipes. Sometimes I do the preamble, sometimes not. I like that on other blogs too as sometimes I have time to read (like today!) and other times not. You are doing great!

Roxana GreenGirl said...

OMG, how do you manage all those kid activities? I only have one baby and it's getting overwhelming sometimes
The donut muffins look great. I read a couple of post about these delicious donuts, I guess is my time to make some.
Have a wonderful day Kristen

Depends on the post - sometimes I can't relate or am not really into what the blogger is writing about and I just want to see the yumminess and other times I totally get what they are saying. I think posts can change in length as long as they are focused and getting the point across. I wouldn't worry about how much people like to read as long as your happy with what you wrote :)
PS! I <3 donut muffins.

Your blog is terrific. I think a preamble is nice because we get to learn a little about you -- isn't that part of why we blog? Sometimes it's a way to release some of our stress.

Love the donut muffins - I've made them and we just can't get enough of them in our house.

Good luck with the move and I wouldn't worry about the children -- all will be well.

I fluctuate too! Sometimes I go on and on... other times I do not have anything going on, nor do I have anything particularly witty to say about the recipe, so I just cut to the chase. I think a nice balance of both makes for a great blog! Great looking muffins and good luck staying afloat!

Sandra said...

Love the preamble and love your "duffin" recipe. Hope you find some quiet moments.

Claire Gallam said...

Donuts are EVERYWHERE. And I'm okay with that. YUM!!!!

chezsasha said...

I love doughnuts!! And that goes for them in any form.

As for pre-recipe reading, I prefer it to be about a paragraph long. Well, that's how I like to do it anyway, unless there are some particularly interesting personal news to share.
